YOKOHAMA AND THE HOTEL NEW GRAND

In many ways, the Hotel New Grand embodies a great deal of Yokohama’s international spirit. Over 150 years ago, Yokohama opened as a port to the outside world and, in doing so, it became a gateway through which countless cultures could meet, trade and exchange ideas. This hive of activity gave rise to enormous changes within Japan, as well as providing foreign visitors with the chance to experience some of the country’s rich and fascinating culture.

Today Yokohoma still attracts a large amount of visitors, and for over 80 years the Hotel New Grand has provided them with luxurious, high-quality accomodation. The views of Yokohama Bay are stunning, and the classical aesthetic of the original building has now been complemented with the modern-style annex tower, providing an approriate blend of the new and the traditional.

After all, Yokohama may be a forward-thinking city, but that doesn’t mean it has left all of it’s history behind. Along with the numerous modern attractions, there are also a number of nearby sites which provide an exciting window into the area’s heritage.

RESTAURANTS AND BANQUET HALLS

The Hotel New Grand is actually considered to be one of the oldest western-style hotels in Japan, and there is a palpable sense of history as you enter the lobby.

Meanwhile, the spirit of internationalization is perfectly captured in the hotel’s restaurants. European dishes mingle with some unmistakably Japanese flourishes to create a genuinely intriguing range of flavours and textures.

The hotel also has a total of four spectacular banquet halls within it’s main building and tower building. Given the history of these elegant spaces, it’s tempting to think of them as cultural heritage sites in their own right.

They also have some wonderful views of Yokohama Bay, and are an ideal venue for larger events such as wedding ceremonies and receptions.

When people think of Yokohama, the first picture that comes to mind is usually the bay area. Within that, Minato Mirai 21 is arguably the most popular district. Built on reclaimed land in 1983, the area evokes a pleasing seaside resort atmosphere thanks to a multitude of restaurants along with attractions such as the Cosmo Clock 21 ferris wheel.

The world-famous Yokohama Landmark Tower can also be found here, and it’s Sky Garden observatory (on the 69th floor) provides a 360 degree view of Yokohoma. If you wish to enjoy Minato Mirai from the water, there is also the chance to take a boat cruise from Yamashita Park (in front of the hotel) to Pukari Sanbashi.

In the Shin-Yokohama area, you’ll find the Yokohama Arena, Nissan Stadium and the Shin-Yokohama “Raumen” Museum. This museum is dedicated to the traditional noodle soup dish of Ramen, and includes a recreation of Tokyo from the Showa period.

Meanwhile, those more interested in fashion and shopping would do well to visit the stylish Motomachi district. Close to here you can also find the historically significant area of Yamate, which was a settlement for Westerners during the end of the 19th century.

Between Yokohama and Tokyo lies the Yokohama Chinatown, which is the largest of it’s kind in Japan. After Yokohama opened it’s port in 1859, many Chinese immigrants arrived to start a new life here. What began as a series of modest settlements has now grown into an enormous array of shops and restaurants.
